“In the Footsteps of the Forbidden City” - Mandarin Chinese Culture Week

A special summer experience where children can playfully get familiar with the Chinese language while discovering one of China’s most iconic cultural treasures, the Forbidden City (Palace Museum), through stories, creative activities, and shared experiences.

The program combines cultural learning with hands-on crafts, including painting, architecture, porcelain making, textile arts, and traditional festival customs, all presented in an engaging, immersive way.

The sessions are led by native Chinese teachers, with English as the working language, allowing children to learn and interact in a natural, international environment.

 

WEEKLY PROGRAM OVERVIEW

1. day: Entering the Forbidden City

The history and architectural layout of the Forbidden City. Focus on the most iconic building, the Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Hall).
👉 Handicraft activity: making a 3D palace model

2. day: Famous paintings of the Forbidden City

Exploring one of the most famous works in the Palace Museum collection, “Along the River During the Qingming Festival.”
👉 Handicraft activity: painting a canvas bag inspired by the artwork’s motifs

3. day: A day in the life of an emperor

The daily life of the imperial court: how the emperor lived and worked in the palace.
👉 Handicraft activity: clay figure of a palace maid

4. day: Treasures of the Forbidden City

Discovering the world of imperial treasures: Chinese porcelain and traditional silk weaving.
👉 Handicraft activity: blue-and-white porcelain-style plum vase and a Song brocade pouch (宋锦 patterned silk bag)

5. day: Festivals in the Forbidden City

Traditional Chinese festivals and the world of palace lanterns.
👉 Handicraft activity: making a traditional-style palace lantern
